Do you actually sweat while swimming?

Substantially — hard swimming generates the same metabolic heat as hard running, and the body sweats to shed it even submerged; the water just removes the evidence instantly. Elite-swimmer studies measure meaningful sweat rates during training. You finish soaked for the wrong reason and never see the loss.

What is immersion diuresis?

Water pressure on the body shifts blood centrally, the heart senses 'extra' volume, and the kidneys respond by exporting fluid — you urinate more during and after immersion. Combined with unseen sweat, a long ocean session runs a double-drain that no thirst signal reports honestly, because cool water suppresses thirst too.

Does swallowing seawater matter?

The salt-mouth problem is real at the margins: ocean swimmers ingest small amounts of highly concentrated salt water, which adds sodium load while the swim drains fluid — one reason post-swim thirst can feel strangely intense once it finally arrives.
